As part of OpenStack, Red Hat has made the code of management software ManageIQ open source. The publication was already expected earlier. Red Hat acquired ManageIQ in December 2012. The provider had an eponymous and then proprietary cloud management program on offer. So far only Red Hat's CloudForms have been implemented.
Infrastructure Group Senior Vice President Tim Yeaton announced the release of the program code at the OpenStack Summit in Atlanta . Before the code could be released, sources of ZDNet USA had to undergo significant revisions and changes.
Yeaton did not comment on this topic. However, he said that although ManageIQ integrates with OpenStack - such as the commercial offshoot CloudForm - it can leverage all types of clouds, including Microsoft Azure.
In addition to Red Hat in Zukfunft, partners such as Booz Allen Hamilton, CiRBA and Chef Code contribute to ManageIQ. Red Hat also wants to provide additional content for integration and orchestration of Lab Automation. Thus, OpenStack-based clouds should be easier to develop and test.
However, ManageIQ's source code is not yet open to the public, said Joe Fitzgerald, general manager of cloud management at Red Hat. During the quarter, the project will be the first full open source release.
In addition, ManageIQ should be a community project in the future. The developments of the ManageIQ community will be used in the future for CloudForms, said Yeaton. The model is Fedora, which has laid the foundations for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).
"Some companies in the industry are focused on creating an open source cloud infrastructure with OpenStack, selling expensive, proprietary management software. But we believe that the full cloud should be open, without backing. So we're contributing this valuable code base to open the management stack for the first time. "
