Administrators who want to manage PCs like mobile devices could easily do it with Microsoft's new migration tool. Companies looking to manage all of their mobile devices and Windows 10 PCs from a single console can do so with almost any modern mobile device management (MDM) solution. But there is still a difficult hurdle: to enforce the group policy objects defined for desktop administration on Windows 10 with smartphones and tablets. The Microsoft MDM Migration Analysis Tool (MMAT), which is due to arrive in April with the update Windows 10 Creators Update, aims to help with this process.

How MMAT Translates Windows 10 Group Policies

MMAT examines GPOs in Windows 10, determines if there are equivalent MDM policies, and then generates a report that administrators can use. For example, if administrators use Group Policy to impose passwords of at least six characters on all PCs, MMAT will indicate whether there is a corresponding MDM policy that administrators can use. To date, they still have to manually identify MDM policies equivalent to their GPOs.

However, MMAT does not perform the actual process of translating GPOs into MDM policies. And it does not work with other types of Windows desktop management technologies, especially third-party publishers.

Most organizations do not yet use MDM to administer desktops and mobile devices - an approach known as unified device management (UEM) - but almost all MDM providers offer this option.

But a growing number of organizations are going to adopt EMU because it makes administrators' work easier and improves security. Therefore, with MMAT, Microsoft takes a step ahead, estimates Gold.
